St John's Boldre

Remembering our founder, William Gilpin, on the 300th anniversary of his birth in 2024

We have strong links to our local church, St John the Baptist, Boldre and with our local community.  William Gilpin became the vicar of Boldre in 1777 and started a charity school for '20 poor boys and 20 poor girls of farm labourers' from the parish.  This school was later moved to the

workhouse on the present school site, and subsequently became the current William Gilpin Primary School.   He died in 1804 and is buried in the churchyard of St John's.

SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools)

Church of England and Methodist schools are subject to SIAMS inspection approximately every five years. Inspectors must answer 6 or 7 inspection questions, enabling them to evaluate the school's effectiveness as a Church school.  Our most recent inspection report can be found here.

Children and Families Worker

Hi,   I'm Mel and I work with St Saviour's Church in Brockenhurst as the Children and Families Worker.  Part of my role is to be a bridge between church, school and home, helping children and families feel supported and connected.

At William Gilpin, I get involved with leading worship, helping pupils explore the Bible in creative ways, and encouraging children who want to take a lead in worship.  You might also see me around school supporting projects, celebrating Christian festivals or joining in with special events.

The church school vision group setting up for worship

Over the past two years I've had the privilege of working with the Church School Vision Group.  This group of pupils have been at the heart of inspiring change and living out our school's Christian values.  Together they have:

  • raised enough money to twin all the school's toilets through the international charity 'Toilet Twinning'
  • produced powerful artwork for Christian Aid's Creative for Climate Justice Project and one pupil was even invited to the Houses of Parliament where they spoke up for climate justice and shared God's message of love, equality and dignity with 22 Members of Parliament
  • led a child-led worship in school to raise awareness of community and global issues.

The CSV group are also ambassadors for prayer and pastoral care in school.

Outside of school I run groups and activities where children and families can have fun, make friends and discover more about faith together.  Everything I do is about creating spaces where people feel valued, welcomed and able to grow.
